Sufi practices: zikr - ritualised recitation of the names used to describe god, singing (cid:894)sa(cid:373)a"(cid:895) and dancing, ascetic practices fasting, sexual abstinence, reducing sleep, and other bodily disciplines, mystical poetry. Early history: 10th/11th cs - groups were formalising themselves into orders, discipleship of charismatic, learned individual sufis, shaikh, pir (old/wise man), saints, established khanqahs (hospices).
