PSYC 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Retrograde Amnesia, Synapse, Metamemory
Document Summary
People"s beliefs and awareness of how their memory works and what they will remember. Study: learn/encode words make prediction delay retrieve (memory test) Encoding: acquiring information and transferring it into memory: can take different forms, richer, more active processes tend to enhance memory. Maintenance rehearsal (rote repetition: maintains information but does not transfer it to ltm, ex: remember a phone number, plainly repeating the numbers to yourself. Elaborative rehearsal (meaningful elaboration: transfers information to ltm, make the connection between the information and something meaningful in your life. Memory depends on how information is encoded. Depth of processing: shallow processing: little attention to meaning (poor memory) Ex: is the word printed in capital letters: deep processing: close attention to meaning (good memory) Ex: does the word rhyme with xxx? (more shallow deep question) Ex: does the word fit into the sentence xxxxx? (deepest question) Creating connections, cues for remembering, organization: group things together in meaningful units, aids in retrieval as well.
