Communication ethics- the standards of right and wrong that one applies to messages that are sent and received. How do we determine what is ethical: family, friends, religion, experiences, personal attitudes, values, beliefs, organizational affilition, media, profession/workplace. Principles of ethics: communication is a transaction between two or more persons, each participant in the communication process has ethical responsibilities, you can only be responsible for your part in the process. Issues in com ethics: truthfulness, sharing/withholding information (disclosure, benefit and harm of messages (consequences, absolutism vs. relativism. Absolutism- same standard for everyone in every situation. Communication goals: content- want to get a job, relationship- desire to change or maintain a relationship, identity- how we would like others/ourselves to see us.
