Document Summary
Showed greater brain activation on the left prefrontal cortex (which causes more positive emotions) both at rest and when responding to positive and negative events. Depressed people have trouble setting goals to achieve and trouble believing goals are possible. Don"t get as many illnesses and diseases: monks can lower blood pressure just based on meditation (change in their behavior) Sympathetic nervous system fight or flight response: body is not meant to stay in dangerous situation so ptst people have a hard time flying away from a dangerous situation. Parasympathetic nervous system helps you go back to homeostasis: autonomic nervous system is most important at this moment, where we think mindfulness and meditation is located. Brain: frontal lobe deals with planning, dorsolateral prefrontal- allows us to make logical and executive decisions, anterior cingulate- gives us motivation, olfactory bulb- tells us smells, tastes, etc, lateral orbitofrontal- allows us to choose appropriate social/emotional response.
