Chapter 11: substance abuse disorders: clump up the following, use, intoxication- have a couple of drinks but not a regular bases, abuse- interferes with life. The amounts being consumed does not mean substance abuse. It must interfere with life to meet the criteria. Of substance abuse: dependence- someone who is an addict. When you drink you have tolerance ( need a heavier drink, or more, body getting more efficient dealing with alcohol) When you stop drinking you have withdrawals. Mormons are one of the few who don"t use any drugs. Alcohol ( one of the most dangerous drugs in our society: inhibitory process. Then inhibits judgment, coordination, reflexes, sensory perception, etc: effects of chronic alcohol use. If you become dependent on it you go through withdrawals when you try to stop. Most adults = light drinkers or abstainers. Males tend to become alcoholics more than females but that gap is closing.
