Work- the use of energy to produce something. Ancient greek words: homo faber- man the or toolmaker or worker, homo ludens- man the player. Work in the middle ages: powerful influence of christianity elevated work to a godlikeness, work was not about accumulating possessions, but serving god. Work ethic- the idea that work was the center of life. Rewards of work: money, challenge, identity, human contact or interaction. Ex: dad would not have contact with anyone if he did not go to work: sense of accomplishment. Neulinger"s paradigm: leisure theories impacted by work o. Wilensky"s compensation and spillover completely revolves around how people react to work: ex: if someone is crunching number might want to go skydiving (compensation) or likes to do sudoku (spillover) o. Workaholic- a person who is addicted to the control and power of work in order to gain approval and success. Play-aversionist- a person who applies the behaviors and standards of work to leisure.
