Country music (country & western, honky tonk: name folk music was eliminated because people had a socialist/communist perception. Folk music took on the connotations of being communist music. Late 1940s folk, country and other names displace hillbilly Shredding hillbilly image and name: country and honky tonk. Steel guitar from hawaii takes us away from binary classifications again. Solo breaks: hank williams: hey good lookin, lap steel guitar with hawaiian influence. Emphasize the backbeat in a way that is much like rhythm and blues and then rock and role: country and honky tonk. Rhythm and blues: 1949 r&b became designation for race music. It was decided that this term was offensive and not a good description of the music: combined blues, jazz, etc, dance music, r&b was dependent upon independent record labels. Labels like atlantic, decca, chess, king recorded and promoted the music: why, bigger labels were excluding r&b.
