PHI 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Harvey Cox, Deviantart, Implied Consent
CONSENT
What is it? - difference between implicit and implied
- No clear consent assumed by actions
- Explicit → a clear declaration
- Implicit → reach for hand
OBJECTIFICATION - to an object of certain use, treating a human as an end not a means
“If you display the goods, you make the sale
MORAL DILEMMA - can’t always control situation
#MeToo
- Having no bra on vs tight pants on guys
SEXUAL AMBIGUITY
DEVIANTART → blocked if dude is aroused, but no one cares about woman being aroused, it is
appreciated and valued
- Body being art
- Female being more artistic than males
Harvey Cox - secular city
Fundamental difference when it comes to how we understand sexuality
SEXUALITY
Male - exclude
Female - good and bad (responsibility)
Create a doconomy in which we put women in a horrible situation...
As wholesome as possible, but parade around in swim suits and dresses
Part of what is at work here in a life negative culture, that’s what we expect
PROTECT, DEFEND, NURTURE
“Can’t control ourselves, when a woman is braless, it’s spoken to our culture”
When sexual violence occurs, how do we deal with that?
More violent rate becomes, more dangerous
Concept of consent is VERY important
Implied consent
Example : tobacco companies argue
Accepting responsibility, no longer their problem because they have warnings
