PSYC 361 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Collectivism, Fundamental Attribution Error, Terror Management Theory
Document Summary
Core questions: how do we form impressions of others, artifacts convey critical first impressions. Self as a product of others expectations: how do we communicate nonverbally, communication via body language, tone of voice, facial expressions. Self fulfilling prophecy: your expectations have come true, but only because you have expected them, halo effect and central traits. Intellectual bloomers: what teachers expected happened, halo effect. Four ways of filling self fulfilling prophecies: emotional climate, expectations of effort, increased opportunity, differential feedback, apply across a variety of settings, parents, children, drug use, managers, employees, and productivity, athletes, birth month, scoring. Judges, juries, verdicts: the universality hypothesis, blind individuals express full emotional facial range. Fear, disgust, surprise, anger, sadness, happiness: convergent evidence supports the hypothesis. Facial leakage: concealed emotions are betrayed by automatic muscle responses: micro-expressions, duping delight. It"s all in the eyes: affect blend, complicated, we are more sensitive to negative information.
