Document Summary

When we read the text of a play it"s just words on the page. Goes to our intellect (it"s up to the reader to create world) When we see a play in performance it is several arts in 1. We respond to stimuli given (visuals, music, etc. ) How do these affect us and our senses. When seeing the play spectacle is our primary focus. Light can focus our attention, set mood, add color, etc. Sets and costumes tell us information about who, where, and when. Language and music can set mood or era. An actors portrayal tells us about their character. This is different than reading text where plot and idea dominate. In text character is just words about or said by character written by playwright. In performance character is portrayed through actions, body, voice, and costume of actor. Role of audience and how to be a member of it. Read play, read reviews, look at advertising, use internet.
