Document Summary

Our galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy. Be(cid:272)ause of that, (cid:449)hat"s left are stars the age of our sun which e(cid:454)plai(cid:374)s ellipti(cid:272)al gala(cid:454)ies" red-yellow appearance. Lenticular: not really a type of galaxy but still worth noting its existence. These are usually the galaxies in the process of transforming from one type of galaxy to another. Irregular: as you can deduce, it"s (cid:374)eithe(cid:396) spi(cid:396)al (cid:374)o(cid:396) ellipti(cid:272)al. Irregular galaxies are often the result of two or more spiral galaxies colliding. Its blue-white color is indicative of ongoing star formation. Galaxies tend to cluster together therefore looking at pictures can be misleading. This further reinforces the importance of measuring the distances between them. Elliptical galaxies are much more common in huge clusters. Brightness alone does (cid:374)ot p(cid:396)o(cid:448)e the o(cid:271)je(cid:272)t"s dista(cid:374)(cid:272)e. Radar telescopes send radio signals into space and bounce off planets. That along with the orbit of the celestial object can provide the information necessary to find the distance of nearby planets.
