MUSC 1001 Lecture 9: music theory I- triads and part writing pt 1
Document Summary
How we get from one chord to another. Smoother transition between chords with less leaping around is usually easier to play and/or sing. Building a root triad with two roots: 2 roots, with the 3rd and 5th being built upon the second/ higher root. To achieve minimal movement, notes that are the same in different chords remain the same. i. e. the g in a c (i) chord remains the same when transitioning to a g (v) chord. The upper 3 notes can change order to achieve this, but the base note should always be the root. The second root can be in a different position than below the 3rd and 5th, and as long as the base note is the root, the chord is still in root position. The base note is the foundation of music in a lot of music. Closed spacing: notes are as close as possible within the chord.
