Figured bass is a good way to tell what the root of a chord is. 2- third inversion numbers in figured bass refer to the interval above the bass note. In a first inversion v7 chord, the seventh is a 6th away, and the root is a fifth away from the bass note. In second inversion, the seventh is a 4th away, and the root is a 3rd away. In third inversion, the seventh is the bass note, and the root is a 2nd away. Notation changes in minor keys, because the third of a v7 chord must be raised/sharped. A slash through a number in figured bass tell that the designated third is raised a half step. Adding to or changing the inversion of a chord does not change its function within music.
