BIOS 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Embalming
Document Summary
Spice lab: name and explain two ways that spices can reduce food borne illness. Spices can reduce food borne illness because they have antibacterial properties which allow them to produce antibiotics. This, in turn, keeps food fresher while adding flavor that makes it more desirable as well. Examples of this can be seen in ancient pharaoh"s embalmment in cinnamon, Rome"s trade of peppers for ransom, and the trade of teas or other spices across oceans in medieval times. Fungi/infectious dose: describe three infection-fighting characteristics of our skin. The human skin is very protective because it is dry, has acidic secretions, ad is exposed to radiation from the sun. The size of the inoculum does have an effect on how easily an infection takes hold because the more bacteria, the stronger its chances at causing a successful infection.
