EDPS 250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget, Behaviorism
Document Summary
Developmental changes that occur in just about everyone. Development is characterized by a rather sudden or dramatic change in ones behavior or thinking. Development that occurs as gradual progression with many small additions to behaviors and thought processes. Stage: a developmental period characterized by a qualitatively distinct way of thinking/behaving. Criticisms of this theory: variations across cultures and educational contexts. Things move from one stage to the next in a chronological order. Think that this occurs for every child throughout the world, no matter the educational context or culture; believes every child follows the same exact timeline as well. Can better understand how maturational levels impose limits on abilities and interests. Nurture, not nature; environment can do anything to shape them into anyone. Environmental stimuli and modeling have an influence on children"s development. Focus on early experiences; social and personality development. Limitations: difficult to empirically measure unconscious desires i. Emphasis on thinking processes and how they change, qualitatively, over time.
