Motivates them to engage in behaviors that others will respond to approvingly. Helps them make choices appropriate for their goals. Past behaviors and performances (ex: academic success) Self concept: a collection of beliefs about oneself and responses of others (ex: i am a swimmer) Self-esteem (self-worth): judgments and feelings about one"s value. Self-efficacy: belief in ability to succeed in specific situations or specific tasks. Self-handicapping: action or choice which prevents a person from being responsible for failure. Contingent self-worth: self-worth remains heavily dependent on the opinions of others. Effects: an emotional roller coaster, feeling elated one day and devastated the next. Identity diffusion: no exploration and no commitment. Theory of mind: awareness that people have inner, thoughts, beliefs, and feelings.
