Document Summary

Clear contrast between this and the fairchild family. Everyone knew about this book in the 19th century after the english version was made. Twain attempted a translation of struwelpeter which was not very accurate. Made this a lot longer than the original story because he thought it was funny. Harriett and the matches correlates to agusta noble in the fairchild family. How does the presentation of these two stories differ? (narrative is essentially the same) In the fairchild family it was much more upfront and in this one it is much more comical. Ex: the cats are crying when she dies. More exaggeration and brutality of the image in this story. Dark humor in many children"s books which (for some reason) is popular with children. No one can seriously worry about these things; very over the top, unreal, and extreme. Need to be able to separate elements of the black humor from reality.
