Notes
For the first time, more southern whites voted republican over democratic in
the rural south, because of the previous rural south's white voter allegiance to
the democratic party in 1964
Able to "peel off" white southerners to vote republican over democratic,
which is what led to this drastic change
-
1980: more southern whites began, for the first time, to identify with the
republican party (no longer just voting with them, but now also voting with that
party
-
1970s Market Solutions
Sunbelt (right to work)
-
Free trade
-
Deregulation
-
Examples: Las Vegas, pornography, no fault divorce, volunteer military, Airline
Deregulation Act 1978
-
High inflation and high unemployment (wouldn’t predict that these would
happen at the same time)= Stagflation
-

Cultural Fragmentation
Roe v. Wade 1973- Griswold v. Ct. 1965 and Baird v. Einsentadt 1972
-
Stonewall, 1969- gay rights
-
Arguments emerge regarding prostitution and pornography and whether or not
they should be legal/publicized
Some argued that it was good for women having choice and having
control of their bodies, and others argue that it is not good for them and
bad for their health
-
Griswold gives married couples the right to freely choose and discuss whether
or not they would like to have or purchase birth control (no longer the state
predicting what they can and can not do)
-
Stonewall
A gay bar for both men and women
Found comfort and safety here because homosexual activities/behaviors
were largely considered immoral and illegal at this time
New York had laws against homosexuals engaging in homosexual
behaviors
Minimum of 3 gender appropriate articles of clothing at a time
Technically illegal for homosexuals to congregate and engage in "gay
behaviors", which made these bars illegal
Many of these bars were operating illegally and operating without a
license because these behaviors are considered illegal
§
Police raid the bar and 13 people were elected (some were people
drinking at the bar because of 3 garment rule and some were
owners/employees violating the selling of alcohol without a license rule)
This sparked many protests and led to the beginning of the gay rights
movement
-

for Reagan as a democrat
