Hostile or negative attitude towards a group of people based solely on their membership to a group of people. Affective: type and intensity of emotion linked to the attitude. Cognitive: the beliefs or thoughts linked to the attitude. Humans have a natural inclination to form categories for people, places, and things. Stereotype: a generalization that certain traits are common to all members of a group of people. Stereotypes help people group things and makes the world easier to understand. We have highly sophisticated and individual thoughts on topics we really care about, but we use stereotypes to process other things. Can create expectations that individuals can"t (or don"t want to) meet- self esteem problems. Can make it hard to perceive individual differences. Women are stereotyped as more talkative and empathetic, and less competent and aggressive than men. Benevolent: positive- kinder, more nurturing, more empathetic, etc.
