Culture: the language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and even material object that characterize a group and are passed from on generation to another. Material culture: the material objects that distinguish a group of people, such as their: art, buildings, weapons utensils, machines, hairstyles. Non-material culture (symbolic culture): a groups way of thinking and doing, examples: beliefs, values, and patterns of behavior. Gestures: the ways in which people use their bodies to communicate with one another. Language: a system of symbols that can be combines in an infinite number of ways and can represent not only objects but also abstract thought. Language and perception: sapir-whorf hypothesis: language creates ways of thinking and perception. Values: the standard by which people define what is desirable or undesirable, good or bed, beautiful or not pretty, forms the basis for norms. Norms: e(cid:454)pe(cid:272)tatio(cid:374)s of (cid:862)right(cid:863) (cid:271)eha(cid:448)ior, are rules defining appropriate and inappropriate behavior, norms are so ingrained they guide behavior without our awareness.
