Race: Discrediting Myths

There is a fixed number of races – NOT TRUE
Some races are superior to others – NOT TRUE
Race: a group whose inherited physical characteristics distinguish it from other groups
Ethnicity: having distinctive cultural characteristics
Ethnic work: activities designed to discover, enhance, maintain, or transmit an ethnic
or racial identity
Minority group are people who are singled out for unequal treatment and who regard
themselves as objects of collective discrimination.
Dominant group are the group with the most power, greatest privilege, and highest
social status
Discrimination: an act of unfair treatment directed against an individual or a group
Individual discrimination: person-to-person discrimination; the negative treatment of
people by individuals
Institutional discrimination: negative treatment of a minority group that is built into a
society’s institution; also called systemic discrimination
Racism: prejudice and discrimination on the basis of race
Prejudice: an attitude or prejudging, usually in a negative way
Contact Theory: The idea that prejudice and negative stereotypes decrease and race-
ethnic relations improve when people from different backgrounds, who are of equal
status, interact frequently
