How did dynastic rulers allow art to flourish / how did they squelch them. The history of china is, by practical human standards, almost endless. For performance purposes we can start 1000 years bce with the music. Instead of do-re-me, they use a 12 tone scale. They don"t tune to an absolute, but to each other. The musicians may have been trained to do their part by different people or schools. They come together and play as they have been taught, and adjust to each other on the fly. Chinese music, frequently linked to dance, has been documented at least 1000 years bce. We"ll look at precursors of beijing opera (kunqu,zaji) 1234-1368, the yuan dynasty, saw the rise of zaju. In the northern part of china, this is an umbrella term for popular entertainment that started out as collections of dances, songs, monologues, acrobatics, skits and lyrics that would be comparable to poetry.
