Document Summary

Chemical element- a pure substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means into other substances. Mendeleyev: nineteenth century russian chemist who invented the periodic table. Periodic table-arranges the elements in a way that their chemical properties repeat in each vertical column. Living organisms are made up of twenty-five (25) essential chemical elements, however four. Bulk elements consist of 96% of their mass. Atomic number-the number of protons in the nucleus. Ion- an atom (or group of atoms) that has gained or lost electrons, therefor has a net negative or positive charge, and participates in many biological processes, including the transmission of messages to the nervous system. Mass number- the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Isotopes- different forms of of the same atom having the same number of protons but different neutrons. Atomic weight- the average mass of all isotopes. Radioactive isotope- unstable isotopes which emit energy while they break down into a stable form.
