It is there to support and create a means of ease in terms of comprehension. Visual design options: page layout, page orientation- primarily standard for all printing jobs. Deals with the length vs. width of a work for greater ease when reading. 65 characters per lines across is a fair amount before you bore readers. Lines that are too long or too short slow down readers. Have a document be about 20-24 picas long [ basically the page length of a 12 pt. font document: columns are placed for quick reading, but also an aesthetic appeal that goes with only certain genres. Balance out the number of columns so that they do not lose their purpose or become distracting. Indention- used as signals of new/ starting ideas. Can also be used to distinguish between certain works, sections, [quotes, works cited etc] Alignment- justifying your text to the left is the most common setting for easier reading.
