The most prepared soldier of the US was Robert E Lee
• He decided that he could not take up arms against Virginia and thus decided to become the
head of the Virginia militia
o If Lee would have chosen to defend his state rather than his country, it is possible
that there would have never been a civil war
▪ Southern militias were a joke
▪ Had people lie Calhoun and Jefferson Davis that led these militias and
formed part of them
• The Rev. War established a de-facto nation,
o It wasn't until the eve of the Civil war and the cowardice of James Buchanan, that it
became a nation
o When Lincoln was elected 1859, they seceded from the union, and there was nothing
to change that tied
o The nation was succeeding at a cliff, allowing southern states to bind,
▪ U had a few powerful people in the legislature, and They were the ones that
were leading these successions due to financial investments
o Lincoln decides to arrest these people for doing so
▪ These people told Lincoln that he was overstepping his power as president,
yet they did nothing when saying that Dred Scott should be killed
Lincoln was a genius man.
Was one of the first presidents to bring in the Minstrel Show into the white house
Did NOT free the slaves
▪ He did not HAVE this power
▪ The emancipation Proclamation did NOT cause the civil war
▪ The war began in1861 is when the war began, the E.P was not signed until 1863
o Two candidates fighting,
▪ The people were so one side of the democratic party, Lincoln won with about 40%
of the votes
• The War happened due to his election
• Instead of this war being short [people signed up because they did not want
to miss it, thinking it would be curtailed]
• When the order to fire on Fort Sumter in the morning, the Citadel Cadets
took honor in being the ones that began the war
▪ The worst conflict in human history
▪ First time in history that weapons in mass destructions were used
• These weapons had been built long ago, yet not used
• Problem with automatic weapons was that they were too big to operate along
