Two favorite dances in the high renaissance were the pavane and the galliard. With possible origins in spain, the pavane was a processional dance found throughout europe in the 16th century. It is generally in moderate to slow duple time with the long, short, short, rhythm very common. Pavane was usually followed by the galliard, which features quick tempo, three beats per measure. The dance steps feature leaps, jumps, and hops. Instruments came in families called consorts and were categorized as loud (haut) or soft (bas) During the renaissance the lute held the highest respect of all musical instruments.
