Important to discover causal relationships: good internal validity. Important to study strong and consistent effects that have biological or social importance: social validity. Skinner: experimental analysis of behavior: relies on single subject research, how rewards, punishments and other factors affect behavior over time, mostly non-human animals. Applied behavior analysis: humans, important in research on developmental disabilities, education, organizational behavioral and health. Change from one condition to another depends on participant behavior: wait until change is consistent before moving on to next condition. Steady state strategy: easier to detect and control noise in the data. Most basic single-subject design: aba, abab, ababa, helps demonstrate that it was the dv and not an extraneous factor.
