Intro to sociology 1051- lecture 1- sociology introduction. Sociology- how society affects people and how people affect society. Sociological perspective- stresses that peoples social experiences- the groups to which they belong and their experiences in these groups- underlie their behavior. Two different ways to look at things in society: Micro perspective- social interactions on a small scale. Social facts are the laws, morals, values, religious beliefs, customs, fashions, rituals, and all of the cultural rules that govern social life. Campaigned for laws against child labor: debois- first african american to earn a doctorate at harvard. 1896-1914 he wrote a book on race relations between aa and whites. Theory- a general statement about how some parts of the world fit together and how they work. 3 main theories: conflict, functionalism, symbolic interaction.
