Hearing and listening are not the same. Hearing is how one receives and processes sound where as listeners we try to control what we hear and how we hear it. Hearing: focuses on the speaker and helps them to discriminate among sounds. Understanding: helps the listener to build vocabulary, take notes and ask questions. Remembering: a technique for retaining and recalling information. Interpreting: when you have to take into account the total communication context, and have the ability to empathize and let your listening partner know that you understand.
