Music Fundamentals:
Chapter 1: Rhythm, Meter, and Tempo
Music:
• The art of sound in time
1) Art
2) Sound
3) Time
Beat:
• A regular underlying pulse
The basic unit of measurement for time in music
Clock time (measured in seconds) VS Musical time (measured in beat)
Tempo:
• The speed of music
• The rate at which the basic, regular beats follow one another
• Can be exact or approximate
*Some common tempo indications include:
• Adagio= Slow
• Andante= On slow side, not too slow
• Moderato= Moderate
• Allegro= Fast
Metronome:
• A mechanical or electrical device that ticks beats at any desired tempo
Accent:
• Making some beats more emphatic (more intense) louder than others
(Patterns of strong and weak beats help beat keep track of time)
Broadest sense:
• General way music unfolds in time
• Main driving focus in time
Specific sense: “A rhythm
• The specific arrangement of long and short notes (durations) in a piece of music
Measure:
• Each occurrence of a repeated pattern of beats with a principal strong beat followed by one or
more weaker beat
