We use this resource very heavily, and tend to be very careless about protecting it. Major points: groundwater is not underground rivers! It is storage of water in pore space and in fractures in rocks. Its movement can impact surface geology, too: groundwater is a critically important resource, there are many ways that humans create issues with groundwater resources. Waters falls on the ground and soaks in, works its way through cracks, fractures, and sediment. The water table is: the level below which pore space is 100% saturated. The zone of aeration is: above the water table.
