We"ve (hopefully) learned a lot about geology this semester. One possible answer: people use earth"s materials and processes for energy and mineral resources. If we understand earth"s history as well as the geologic processes that occur, we can better find and utilize these resources. __nonrenewable______________________ resources: these form or accumulate over millions of years, and we consider quantities present fixed. This includes coal, natural gas, iron (and a lot of other stuff). So if we use up what is currently present, we are not going to get more. ___renewable____________________ resources: these are either virtually inexhaustible or are relatively quickly replenished (on the scale of years to decades). Metallic resources: 249 kg iron, 35 kg aluminum, 11 kg copper, 6 kg lead, 6 kg manganese, 5 kg zinc, 9 kg other metals. Energy resources: 3500 kg petroleum, 3700 kg coal, 3850 kg natural gas.
