He fell into the sea but was saved by the nereids. Hephaestus made a golden throne and was entrapped by the mest. Hephaestus refused to return to mount olympus to free hera until, drunk by dionysys, he was forced to do it. The embodiment fo war and blood lust: physically fit, in art he is no different than any warrior. Ares is having an affair with aphrodite, wife of hephaestus. Aphrodite is beautiful and ares is ugly. Hephaestus finds out, rushes to his workshop and makes a chain that could not be broken escaped, or even unfastened . He arranges his trap over the bed, as it was fine as a cobweb, not to be notices by watchers. He catches the two lovers and brings them to mt olympus to ridicule them in front of the gods. This story is suppose to be humorous. He of the stone heap : comes down to earth from mt olympus, herma=stone heap.
