Document Summary
Electryon married his own niece, and they had a daughter, alcmena and nine sons. Electryon had two nephews: eurystheus and amphitryon. He entrusted his kingdom and daughter to his nephew amphitryon. Amphitryon killed electryon in a quarrel, married alcmena, and ran away to. Alcmena would not sleep with him until he avenged the death of her brothers. Zeus appears to alcmene disguised as amphitryon. The same night amphitryon, who is back, also sleeps with his wife. Two kinds of seed, divine and mortal. From the divine seed came heracles, from the mortal iphicles. Hera, jealous, delayed the birth of heracles. The birth goddess came to help but at hera"s instruction she sat outside the chamber with her legs crossed and her fingers intertwined. By magical sympathy the birth goddess prevented the birth of heracles. She realized what was happening and pretended that heracles had already been born. The birth goddess jumped up and broke the spell.
