a. Social media, marketing, and surveillance
Characteristics of the internet era of convergence and social concerns
Privacy is the primary commodity that social media sites can sell
The internet in the convergence era
-wide spread use of internet
-the US lags far beyond compared to other developed countries
-has to do with the fact that because the US relies primarily on the market in order to drive
susriptios, it is’t as effiiet to hae the Goeret do this. Private market in the US, not in other
countries.
-we are not as far along in terms of use of the internet as others
-convergence of voice, video, data
-distinct industries now integrated.
-used to have a phone company that handled telephone calls. (wanted to make phone call, use
telephone). If you want video, you get television. Now these once distinct kinds of media have merged
into one. Smart phone has voice, video and data.
-the technologies have converged and the industries converge as well
-commerce and advertising deeply dependent on internet
-convergence of advertising industry and digital media industry
-Shift to social media. Primary content of internet is social media during convergence
Why are social media so good for advertisers?
-Solves the basic unknown in advertising
-are ads making people buy my products?
-lot closer to being able to link the ads to purchase. (tracking internet use and
ads we are exposed to) with tailored ads because advertisers know so much about us, they are more
effective at reaching us
-digitization allows persistent tracking
-more and more of our purchasing happens online, so they can track us
-interpersonal contacts more persuasive in buying decisions than media
-allows people who we know to market a product, whether it be intentional (friend asks
you to buy a product) or unintentional (friend posts about getting a new object, and you want one too)
