• Depression: a condition of depressed mood and includes symptoms of: difficulty concentrating,
loss of interest in activities, feeling hopeless, insomnia, suicidal thoughts- must hinder daily
functioning in multiple areas of life
o Two common depression disorders:
â–Ş Major depressive disorder (~2 weeks of symptoms for diagnosis
â–Ş Dysthymia (2 years of symptoms for diagnosis)
• Anxiety: a condition of nervousness, uneasiness, or apprehension about future events or
situations- must hinder daily functioning in multiple areas of life
o Common anxiety disorders:
o Phobias
o Panic disorder
o Generalized anxiety disorder
o PTSD
o Obsessive-Compulsive disorder
Non-modifiable risk factors for mental health conditions
• Age (younger- 15-24)
• Sex (women 2-3x more likely to develop than men)
• Genetics
• Traumatic experiences
• Chronic medical conditions
Modifiable
• Physical inactivity
• Substance abuse
• Low self-esteem
• Distress
• Negative lifestyle behaviors
PA as treatment (tertiary)
• Monotherapy: the sole or only treatment for a condition
• Augmentation therapy: adding exercise to an existing treatment, such as medication or therapy
• Adjunct therapy: adding exercise because it has health benefits other than treating the disease
