HHP 2200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Transtheoretical Model, Netflix, Problem Solving
Transtheoretical Model:
• Constructs:
o Stages of change (readiness)
o Process of change
o Decisional balance
o Self efficacy
• Stages of Change:
o Precontemplation- not active and not considering increasing PA and they are NOT
READY (i can’t or I wont)
o Contemplation- not active but thinking about increasing PA and they are
CONSIDERING
o Preparation- doing some PA, but not meeting the PA guidelines and they are READY,
MAKING SOME CHANGE
o Action- meeting PA guidelines for <6 months and they are ACTIVE
o Maintenance- meeting PA guidelines for >6 months and they are MAINTAINING
ACTIVITY
*be familiar with the stages and their order
*BUT some individuals do not always start always go through the stages one by one. They may skip
stages or they can go backwards.
• Process of change:
o Cognitive
▪ Increases knowledge
▪ Being aware of risks (need to be personalized)
▪ Caring about consequences of one’s behavior to others (example: a person’s
behavior such as smoking influences the family with second hand smoke)
▪ Comprehending the benefits of PA (personalized again)
▪ Increasing healthy opportunities- increasing awareness of PA opportunities
around them
▪ Precontemplation to contemplation to preparation
o Behavioral
• substituting alternatives
o substitute going for a walk instead of watching Netflix
• enlisting social support
o friends and family
• rewarding yourself
o new workout outfit after accomplishing something

They may skip stages or they can go backwards: process of change, cognitive. Father wants to exercise but is very busy with his kids. Immediate- energy, satisfaction: longer term- fitness, health, weight loss, outcomes that sustain physical activity, attainable and realistic outcomes, health benefits.
