HHP 1300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Extracellular Fluid, Lipid Bilayer, Pinocytosis
Document Summary
Basic characteristics of cells: smallest living subdivision of the human body, diverse in structure and function, principle parts of the cell, plasma membrane, cytoplasm and organelles, nucleus. The plasma membrane: outer boundary of cell, separates intracellular environment from the extracellular environment, regulates movement of materials in and out of cell, a selective mechanical barrier. Plasma membrane structure: molecules, protein, types, peripheral. Large numbers of molecules can be exchanged with extracellular fluid simultaneously= bulk transfer: types, endocytosis, phagocytosis, pinocytosis, exocytosis. Phagocytosis: cell eatcing, occurs in specialized cells, cell extends pseudopods, pseudopods merge to form vacuole around the particle, fate of vesicle: Pinocytosis: cell drinking, engulf extracellular fluid, occurs in almost all cells. Exocytosis: mergind of vesicle membrane with plasma membrane, materials released into the extracellular fluid, used to export materials (enzymes, cell signals) and add material to the plasma membrane. Cytoplasm: portion of cell interior not occupied by the nucleus, consist of, orga(cid:374)elles (cid:894)(cid:862)little orga(cid:374)s(cid:863)(cid:895)
