Framing- process of supplying context and suggesting what an issue is through the use of selection,emphasis, exclusion and elaboration. Attribution of responsibility for problem or issue causes solutions. After reading article more belief that overweight people should pay more for insurance. Less support for policies to protect against weight discrimination. Prediction: repeated news coverage of an issue over time raises the importance of that issue in the public mind. Described as the transfer of salience of issues from the news media to the public. News media don"t tell people what to think, but what to think about . Agenda setting- which issues are most important (if something is covered frequently you"ll think it"s important. Framing-how a story about that issue is told. Explanation for agenda setting: the public does not have ability to know all and rely on mass media, we are cognitive misers (consume just enough information to get through daily life)
