JMC 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Social Learning Theory, Effect Size, Observational Learning
Document Summary
3 things we learned about media and aggressive behavior. Catharsis is no longer used, but very appealing. Priming- associations between concepts, one thing that reminds you of something else (activated by media content) How do we know which are most important?- family, gender, drug use. Effect size- a statistical tool to determine the magnitude, or size, of an effect. Effect size of risk factors for aggression. Gender and family structure has medium effect. Prediction- if we observe aggressive behavior, we are likely to model it in our own lives. Explanation- when we observe others rewarded or punished for their behavior, we learn vicariously about how we should behave in similar situations. Models are the people we observe and learn from (look up to) Can also be celebrities or fictional characters (fiona) Treatment group- watched an adult attack a doll. Control group- watched adult play with other toys and ignore the doll.
