Many different aspects of human language can be studied. Every human language is complex system which consists of several different (interacting) levels or subsystems. Phonetics physical characteristics of sounds: what are the speech sounds of your language, what sounds are not speech sounds at all, how are the sounds of your language produced (tounge/lungs/teeth) Phonology how to combine the sounds together to make a word: what sequences or combinations of sounds are possible in your language, what is a possible word of your language. Linguistic competence: the unconscious knowledge that a native speaker has about his/her language (the knowledge that gives us the answers to all of the questions on the preceding slide) We are not taught it explicitly in school: most of the information that makes up our linguistic competence is stored in our mental grammar.
