PHIL 2429 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Raygun, Schizophrenia, Moral Agency
Document Summary
Why and when am i justified in imposing defensive harm: proportionality. If you are trying to impose unjustified harm on me, i"m entitled to impose similar harms on you. Magnitude of harm and pain (range to measure harm) Proportionality is an assessment of a harm you are trying to use and a harm you are trying to defend yourself from: necessary. Even if it is proportionate, that does not mean it"s necessary. Eating a person to survive example - it is proportionate and necessary, but most would think it isn"t permissible: responsibility. You need 1, 2, and either 3a, 3b, or 3c (maybe 3d) to justify self-defense. They have the intent to harm you. Truck example - yes (villain has malicious intent) Elevator example - no (schizophrenic person has no malicious intent) Vehicle example - no (driver has no malicious intent) Most people think that it"s okay to use defense in elevator and vehicle examples.
