What role do groups play in opinion formation?
What are the groups that matter?
What types of groups influence us?
I. Groups
a. Interesting feedback
i. In many cases, we pick the groups that we identify with
1. We can pick our neighbors, spouses (sometimes co-workers)
ii. We can pick how we identify with different groups
b. Primary groups
i. Who are they?
1. Families, friends, neighbors, co-workers
2. Tend to be a close group that help define your identity
3. Help define political beliefs, actions, etc
ii. Arguments why spouses look like us
1. We pick a spouse that has similar views on each other
2. Start influencing each others views
iii. Family socialization on kids
iv. Friends: only 16% of democrats have a discussion partner that is a republican
1. Only 22% of republicans have a discussion partner that is a democrat
v. Neighbors
1. Starting to live in places with people that look like us, politically
2. 29% of democrats and 38% of republicans say that they want to live in a
neighborhood with people of the same view
vi. If you a democrat, your partner votes democrat 90%.
