Cannot explain 100% why countries are poor today. Geography acts as a foundation (not forgetting about it!) Most colonial powers had access to the sea. Affect both colonizers and those that were conquered. Spices and tea - made countries richer. Motivated by demand for natural resources and agricultural potential. Able to resist colonialization or willing to collaborate. Colonial powers tried to find local powers that were centralized. In some cases, local rulers would willingly sign agreements. If there is already a well-developed institutional system, you just collaborate with the ruler. Political institutions (centralized) economic institutions (exploitive) economic consequences. Tells you something about the population after colonialism ends. If there are high rates of disease, they could not. Evidence that some colonial leaders decided what role certain ethnic groups would play (e. g. military, colonial administration) Those groups that were in the military tend to be in the military today.
