PSY 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Immune System, Sexual Arousal, Hindbrain
Sleep
• When asleep, the brain is still active
• EEG’s sho euros fire ostatly
• Firing changes
o 5 stages of sleep (stages 1-4, REM)
• Stage 1: NREM1 (non REM
o Brain activity
▪ 50% less brain power
▪ theta waves (small, irregular)
o trasitioal stage
o still respond to outside world
o confused misinterpretation of images
o very brief (5-10 minutes)
• Stage 2: NREM 2
o Brain activity
▪ More theta waves
▪ Sleep spindles (rapid rhythmic waves) appear
o Heart rate slows
o Body temperature decreases
o Muscles relax
o Eye movement stops
o Lasts about 20 minutes
o Up to 65% of total sleep in Stage 2
• Stage 3: NREM 3
o Brain activity
▪ Delta waves first appear (slow waves)
▪ Occur 20-50% of the time
o Transitional stage
• Stage 4: NREM 4
o Brain activity
▪ Delta waves (large and slow)
▪ Occur >50% of time
o “lo to ake, dead to the orld
o Children spend 40% of sleep here, adults 25%
• Stage 5: REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
o Brain activity
▪ Waves fast, random (similar to awake)
o Eyes move back and forth
o Waking is difficult, but immediate
o Most dreaming occurs here
o About 20-25% of total sleep time is REM
o Heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure increases
o Most muscles paralyzed—paradoxical sleep
