Study of change across the lifespan-from birth to death. Majority of theories deals with ages of birth to 12 years old, More recently there has been more research to study what happens as we pass puberty: conception occurs at ovulation. People are susceptible to toxins in the first few weeks of pregnancy. 4 weeks- layout for body, can get + pregnancy test. 12 weeks- the highest risk for miscarriage; 20 weeks-fully formed, blinking, lots of movement. 24 weeks-viable pregnancy-baby can be born, with 80% chance of life; birth can actually happen. 36 weeks-gaining . 5 pounds a week: development. By birth infant has undergone many changes. Abilities/knowledge at birth- (cognitive and mental development) Differentiate humans from other species: this was tested through habituation-kids spend lots of time looking at dogs because they aren"t familiar with it, but they don"t look at humans. In the first year, kids can: sit, crawl, walk say first word, increase neural pathways.
