Treatment and the cjs - things to consider. Treatment and prevention are not the same. Prevention = eliminate crime before it occurs. Treatment = designed to decrease the likelihood of repeat offending. Treatment is not a solution for all criminals and all criminal behaviors. Punishment without treatment is a corrections scheme we have relied on throughout our correctional history. Determinate sentencing - rehabilitation was not a priority. You do the crime, you do the time. Important to note - these practices and policies didn"t work well either! Questioned the legitimacy of treatment compared to incarceration. Reviewed 231 evaluative studies from indeterminate time period. With few and isolated exceptions, the rehabilitative efforts that have been reported so far have had no appreciable effect on recidivism.
