Drug addicts suffer from other mental disorders at a very high rate. 90% of opioid addicts, 15% have attempted suicide. Something that genetically predisposes an individual to both have a mental illness and a drug addiction. Theories relying on psychological factors fall into two basic types. People often want to maximize pleasure and minimize pain.
