Document Summary

Provide an overview of pathogenesis and consequences of atherosclerosis. Synthesize the genetic, environmental, and infectious risk factors for atherosclerosis into a cohesive conceptual framework for understanding the essential and exacerbating causes of atherosclerosis. Mostly from heart attacks & strokes, which are mostly attributed to atherosclerosis. Deposition of lesions ( atheromatous plaques ) containing lipids (cholesterol and fats) in the walls of arteries, Infiltration of inflammatory leukocytes (e. g. , macrophages & neutrophils) Formation of cholesterol clefts, spindle-shaped deposits of cholesterol, within the arterial wall. Extreme narrowing of the lumen of the artery. Rupture of inside wall releasing lipid deposits and generating blood clots. Clots that dislodge from the lesion block arteries. -a nonhemorrhagic (i. e. , nonbleeding) stroke occurs when a clot blocks an artery in the brain killing brain cells by depriving them of oxygen. -a heart attack occurs when a clot blocks the coronary artery killing heart muscle cells by depriving them of oxygen.
