COMM 115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Eye Contact
Document Summary
Is a physiological activity that occurs when sound waves hit our eardrums. Is an active, complex process that consists of being mindful, physically receiving messages, selecting and organizing messages, interpreting messages, responding, and remembering. Is being fully present in the moment; wide awakeness . It is not: checking your phone, letting your thoughts drift, focusing on your own thoughts and feelings. For most of us, hearing is automatic and unhindered. Hearing impairments are not only restriction on physically receiving messages. We don"t perceive everything around us; we selectively attend to only some messages and elements of our environments. Once we"ve selected what to notice, we try to understand not just content, but also the person speaking. The most important principle for effective interpretation is to be person-centered. Engage in dual perspective; try to understand the person"s perspective on his or her terms.
